I'm going to stretch the boundaries of the category a little, but I recently finished a couple of excellent books and thought I would pass on the titles.
I'm putting the first here because of the topic although it is technically non-fiction. Memories of the Future Vol 1 is Wil Wheaton's trip through the first half of the first season of STNG. Wheaton looks at each episode in excruciatingly amusing detail. He is able to provide insight as an actor who participated in the series, as a fan of Sci Fi in general and Star Trek in particular, as someone thoroughly immersed in the geek culture, and as a writer. Even though I had heard some of the material on his podcast, I still laughed numerous times at each entry, often at things I had already heard. It's just that funny.
The second is a book by one of my favorite authors: Cherie Priest's Boneshaker. Priest brings steampunk from Victorian England to the western frontier of the United States. It is the end of the nineteenth century and the Civil War has been going on for twenty years. Seattle is a walled city filled with toxic gas and zombies. At first glance it may seem like a book about zombies and airships, sky pirates and mad scientists. The reader quickly discovers it is actually a book about a mother and the love she has for her son, a love because of which she will face all of those things and more.

I believe that "Boneshaker" is getting turned into a movie soon.

I don't remember which Cherie Priest book I read years ago, but I remember telling myself that she was worth another read and then never got back to it.
I'n happy for her. She's such a cool person.
