Anyone's opinion on last weeks episode of the Red Wedding? I read the books so I knew what to expect. There was quite the death threats reminiscent of Stephen King's Misery to poor George R Martin after that one!

I don't have cable so I didn't see the episode but I just LOVED the fan responses across the internet. The shock. The horror. This is the power of storytelling.
One thing that strikes me as interesting is how people criticize G.R.R. Martin personally for killing off characters, as opposed to saying that's a hard world or a brutal story. It would seem that if the character deaths are really integrated into the "stuff" of the stories, the author would be beyond blame. That is, most folks would perceive the events in the stories as being tragic but inevitable. Is it a matter of freshness vs. foreshadowing vs. genre-expectations vs....?

Interesting point. I wonder if there is also a set of expectations regarding character life expectancy which comes with being on a television program. We can all come up with examples of when Hollywood totally changed an ending to live up to the Happily Ever After that people seem to expect when watching television or a movie. Is it more acceptable to kill off a character in a book?
I am totally stealing this idea as a possible panel for next year's Penguicon.

One of my professors in college told me about an alternate ending to "Casablanca" having Bogart and Bergman flying away together and living out the Happily Ever After. The test audiences hated it. I think your right about these expectations that today's audience seems to have. Several of my friends complained that "The Mist" had a terrible ending and I thought it fit in perfectly even though it was sad.

The Mist is one of those rare instances when Hollywood changed the ending and made it better than the book. I remember shouting at the TV when I saw that. Hell, even King has said he likes that ending better.

Just saw the scene where the Mountain popped the Viper's head like a grape. Loved it!
